The secret of Oxford
av Frøydis V. Rasmussen

Writers note: “This story, which was written under a stay visiting Oxford, is the beginning of what may become a longer story, therefore this meaning that it has no proper end. Reference regarding Carfax tower and landscape is real, though all references to the character or the shop, dose not exist, although there are many teashops in Oxford. Otherwise, happy reading”

In a very old teashop in the centre of Oxford a man lived. A man who had seen many years come and go. His half long, short hair had turned grey, if not almost white, and you could see that this man was not a young man anymore. He was not a tall man who was big and strong, he had never been either of these things. The man had baby blue eyes and wore square glasses that gave him a professor like appearance. The man was a man without any family.

His parents had died many years ago, and his mother and father had both been only children, and so was he. The teashop contained the long English tradition of drinking tea, but it also contained hidden things from the outdoor world. People knew him as Mr. Redworth, even though he was called Nathaniel by his friends, as his first name was.

Mr. Redworth was a well known man in Oxford, just because he took time from the world and all of its tasks, and therefore talked to people. The shop went great as people came back for more tea and conversations with the nice shop owner. Some may say that he enchanted people with his words, and maybe they were right, only Mr. Redworth would know, but people seemed happier than ever. It is here this story begins, in a very old teashop, with it’s very old and friendly shop owner, that had a secret. A secret as every other person in the world has in some sort of way, but his secret was as deep as the ocean and high as the clear blue sky. Mr. Redworth secret was not only about himself, but about Oxford if not the world itself.

It was something that had been kept away from it’s “normal people”. There were only some people left to keep it and when time came they would pass it forward to some people who were compatible to the tasks it might clame. The secret was as old as the world and its knowing would break all the happiness that existed. Therefore they were kept safely away by some special and compatible people, who we “normal” people may call witches and wizards. Their existence and community was a secret that many times had been near to exposed, but then thrown away because they became the things we call fairytales.

There had been periods where the community almost had been exposed because of witches and wizards that had not been careless with the secret. Some were burned, as some got away, but the horrible mind of humans used it to get rid of anyone they had anything against.

That was one of the reasons why the secret was kept hidden, but there were many more that would be too complicated for a persons mind to understand. All that needs to be said is that things are not what they seem and therefore it would be better not to understand it at all. The secret contains many things; one is that a community of witches and wizards really exists all over the world. The second one is that they keep information about the world and its existence. It again leads to other things like; why are we here? What is the meaning of life? Is there a God? Why do we die? And so on.

In fairytales witches and wizards are supposed to be people with magical powers, and we normal people were not far away from the truth, but they are also historical people who understands why things are as they are. Well now that this is said we know that Mr. Redworth is as said, not a normal, nice, Professor looking by appearance, but a keeper of the secret.

Mr. Redworth is what we call a wizard and is the leader of the witches and wizards community of Oxford. A great community that had began to fade away and had now become a problem because they were too few to keep the secret alive. It was important as witches and wizards were students of the great magical power each of the possessed and the historical aspects that involved secrets of life and its deep meanings. This was the thoughts of Mr. Redworth as he was standing behind the counter. The dealings the council of witches and wizards decide up on tonight inside of Carfax tower. This was dragging his thoughts away from the people in the shop. His worries were about how it would be done, but the problem needed to be dealt with, but how?!?
